Adrian Newey: We can only hope that the car is better

At the presentation of the new machine head of technical Department of Red Bull Racing's Adrian Newey, shared with the press office team your thoughts about the new car and about the upcoming season.
Q: are you proud of the results of its efforts to establish RB9?
Adrian Newey: Yes, this is the result of the hard work of our specialists, which was done in winter, because last year we were vying for victory in the Championship. It was difficult to deal with modernization and at the same time create new RB8 machine. We have been successful, but ended up in a hard time trouble: we had very little time to develop and build new RB9. And the fact that we have presented today, two days before the start of the test, is, in my opinion, the remarkable achievement of the team.
Question: what distinguishes a new RB9 from her predecessor last year?
Adrian Newey: RB9 is evolutionary development. Perhaps the most significant change is the technical regulations, and with the new Pirelli. In training on the eve of the Brazilian Grand Prix, we held them to a short test, but in fact little is found, because the weather intervened. Pirelli has provided us with information about the behavior of new rubber, but based on past experience, I can say that only the pre-season tests will be something really understand.
Question: what was the attention of designers during the work on the new machine?
Adrian Newey: Because the technical rules changed little, it was about refining RB8. Increased requirements for rigidity of the front fender, and it became more difficult to meet, but in General, the new machine is an evolution of the previous model. All of the principles underlying the last RB8, remained the same, but, hopefully, the machine became better.
Question: in what areas was achieved maximum progress?
Adrian Newey: Here, rather, we should be talking about details than to the areas in which we have been able to achieve something. We have corrected some components where possible improvements. At the first race of the season we will be presenting one or two new elements, but I have no doubt that it will do the rest. Then, throughout the year we will deal with the progressive modernization.
Question: what regions, first of all, the process of modernization will in the year 2013?
Adrian Newey: I think the most important thing is to continue work on studying the behaviour of the tyres. Last year, every time we thought we had finally sorted out with rubber, it had new surprises, and we understand that our knowledge is not complete. This year, once again, changed tires so I think we will learn a lot of new. I have no doubt that everything else will be predominantly associated with detailed fine-tuning the aerodynamics in order to set up the machine according to the preferences of riders.
Question: RB9 preserved nose cone with a step, like last year's model. You had no idea close it further raised Panel?
Adrian Newey: This panel we have, but it is very small and is not too forward, to avoid excessive weight gain. Last year, to reduce a step we made to the fore fairing slot, which also contributed to the cooling. New solution used in 2013-m, has allowed us to refuse.
Question: do you have a feeling that will be less successful, RB9, than its predecessor?
Adrian Newey: To me it is always difficult to answer such questions. Research on the Simulator indicates that we have made progress, but we do not know how advanced the other team. But that is the essence of computer simulation: by definition, the results obtained by using such technologies may not be 100% accurate.
Sometimes departures from calculations are positive, although in my experience this rarely happened. In other cases, you have problems when the results of studies in the wind tunnel at variance with those obtained on the track. So let's wait and see.
In addition, in the last decade of Formula 1 is characterized by rapid modernization during the season. Before it happened, that the machine, which demonstrated speed advantage at the beginning of the year, with a high probability to win the Championship. Now that is gone: teams can recoup, if ahead of rivals in terms of modernization. So now the success is constantly working to improve the machine.
Question: How are you going to pay serious attention to finalizing RB9? You learn machine the year 2014?
Adrian Newey: Yes, and I think that all the teams is really a difficult task. We have limited resources, so we cannot deal with all the cases at once. In the allocation of resources between operational challenges and daunting issues that need to be addressed in preparation for the year 2014, everyone will have to make tough choices.
Our managers, Chief Designer Rob Marshall, head of aerodynamics Peter Prodromou and Mark Ellis Chief Engineer now working in two directions: the control status of the preparations for the year 2014, but are also engaged in 2013-Metro is difficult to find the right balance, each team will address the issue in his own way, perhaps, depending on how the case will be placed in the upcoming Championship. Teams that have a chance to succeed this year, will continue to upgrade, and those who will not be able to take part in the dispute for the title, perhaps, early shift attention to the preparations for the 2014-MU.
