The German manufacturer has revealed a raft of updates across the range of its current fifth-generation supermini, which was first launched back in 2009.
Although the standard petrol and diesel variants will go on sale in April, the range-topping hot Polo isnt scheduled to arrive until 2015. When it does, customers will be able to select either the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox – currently the only transmission option – or a six-speed manual.
The lack of a manual transmission has proved to be one of the drawbacks of the most focused Polo in the range, but this development will bring it into line with its bigger brother, the Golf GTI, which is offered with either a manual or dual-clutch auto gearbox.
Compared to the current car, the revamped Polo GTI will also benefit from a power upgrade that takes its 1. 4-litre four-cylinder engine from 177bhp to 189bhp.
Other UK-specific details of the revised Polos model range have been confirmed. Although three diesel variants – all 1. 4-litre, three-cylinder units – will be offered on the Continent, the UK wont receive the most powerful 104bhp, focusing instead on the 74bhp and 89bhp powerplants, which are both more frugal than the units they replace.
Petrol options available at launch will be a brace of 1. 0-litre three-cylinder units with either 59bhp or 74bhp, a 1. 2-litre four-pot with 89bhp or the 1. 4-litre four-cylinder with cylinder deactivation (ACT), which is offered in the outgoing range but gets a 10bhp power hike to 148bhp. A 108bhp version of the 1. 2-litre four-cylinder TSI will join the line-up later in 2014.
The ranges current eco-champion, the diesel-powered Polo BlueMotion, is to be replaced with a new petrol-fuelled BlueMotion TSI fitted with a 1. 0-litre, 89bhp engine. Volkswagens provisional figures suggest this variant will return a claimed 68. 9mpg on the combined cycle and emit 94g/km of CO2.
Prices will be revealed close to the on-sale date, although the pricing structure is not expected to vary dramatically from the current line-up, which currently starts at just under 11,000.
The first examples of the new Polo are expected to reach customers in late July.
