Jaguar hypercars future to be decided as hybrid powertrain tech enters next stage of developmentThe Jaguar C-X75 is entering a critical stage of its development, which will ultimately decide if the radical hypercar will make production or is cancelled. Jaguar has had the C-X75s complex hybrid drivetrain running on a test bed for the past three months and is now preparing to put it in the car to create a working prototype. This part of the development is absolutely unknown, admitted global brand director Adrian Hallmark at the recent Los Angeles motor show. As such, he said there is a responsible level of question mark surrounding the cars future. We want to do it, but until we know the technology we cannot be clear, he added. When first revealed as a concept at the 2010 Paris show, the C-X75s hybrid drivetrain included a pair of gas turbines to power the car once charge for the four wheel-mounted electric motors had expired. In May 2011 Jaguar confirmed the C-X75 - which features the firms first bonded carbonfibre chassis, built using Williams F1 expertise - had been signed off for production, albeit without the gas turbines. The original drivetrain had been replaced with a turbocharged and supercharged 1. 6-litre petrol engine and two electric motors - one at either end of the car and each driving a transaxle. Earlier this year Jaguar revealed the drivetrains first official figures. The blown 1. 6-litre engine would have as much as 500bhp and would rev to 10,000rpm. The electric motors would be the most powerful in the world and powered by a highly sophisticated liquid and air-cooled battery pack. The front motor would run continuously through a single-speed transmission powering the front wheels, while the rear motor would engage with a bespoke seven-speed automated manual gearbox to provide drive to the rear wheels in tandem with the engine. Jaguar quoted an all-electric range of 37 miles, along with a 200mph-plus top speed and a sub-3. 0sec 0-60mph time, while CO2 emissions were rated at less than 99g/km. While all this technology is working successfully on test beds, Hallmark said the real test would come when it was transferred to running prototypes. Were entering the critical phase of the project, said Hallmark. Weve been a bit reserved and held back from communicating it fully. The future of the project is now less clear than it was last year, but Hallmark said the car would still be built if we have a level of confidence in the technology working together.
