Compared to current minivans the 2012 Mazda5 is a mini-minivan. Ironically though, if you check the dimensions of the 1984 Dodge Caravan, which was the first minivan, youll find the Mazda5 is slightly longer and offers quite a bit more interior space. I guess modern minivans are no longer mini. For those who dont want the space offered by a full-size minivan the Mazda5 is an ideal size. It is almost as nimble as a Mazda3, on which it is based. Yet it can hold six people, although the third row of seats are really only usable by children. Of course with the third row in use the storage space is minimal. Fold the seats down and youve got plenty of storage space. The performance from the new 157 bhp 2. 5-liter four-cylinder engine is adequate. One time a passenger was so impressed by the Mazda5s performance on the freeway that he asked if it had a V-6. The base Sport model is available with a new six-speed manual transmission but the Grand Touring I drove had a five-speed automatic. I found the Mazda5 more fun to drive than an equivalent small SUV and is much more attractive in my opinion. I am also one of those who really appreciate sliding side doors as they are so much more convenient than regular doors, especially if you have young children that need buckling into car seats. I had to haul a couple of 8 foot long 2×4s and found the cargo carrying capabilities were not as good as my 2000 Subaru Outback. The problem is the front seat cannot be lowered with the second row of seats folded so its not practical for carrying long items. Personally, I wish Mazda offered a version without a third row. The amount of space saved without the seats would provide considerably more cargo volume and a flatter floor. Pricing for the 2012 Mazda5 starts at $19,195 and climbs to just $23,875 for the loaded Grand Touring model, making the lineup a few grand less than a Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V and considerably less expensive than a minivan.
