Mercedes-Benz held a big party in Stuttgart over the weekend to celebrate the 125th birthday of the motor car, or at least when Carl Benz filed his patent. As part of the celebrations, Michael Schumacher, Nico Rosberg and David Coulthard, the Mercedes-Benz Formula One stars, drove three Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-CELL cars onto a stage at Daimlers headquarters. These three production cars then left Stuttgart yesterday for a drive around the world. They will cross four continents and traverse 14 countries in 125 days. Later this week the three cars arrive by plane in Florida where they will be driven across the USA via Miami, New Orleans, San Antonio, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Salem, Seattle and Vancouver before being air freighted to Sydney, where they will traverse Australia before proceeding on to China. En route Mercedes-Benz plans to demonstrate the viability of fuel cell cars to governments and other interested parties. Mercedes-Benz claims a B-Class F-CELL car can travel about 250 miles with a full load of hydrogen. This makes it much more practical for longer journeys than an electric car with traditional batteries. However, at present Mercedes-Benz says there are only around 200 hydrogen-fueling stations in the world. Obviously there will have to be many thousands more before a fuel-cell car is practical for regular folk like you and I, at least without a support crew.
