A four-cylinder engine will return to BMWs U. S. line-up for the first time in since 1999. The new 2. 0-liter engine combines twin-scroll turbocharging with high-pressure direct-injection and BMWs Valvetronic intake control. Thanks to this high-tech engineering, the 240-bhp and 260 lb-ft of torque produced by the four-cylinder is actually more than what youd find if you opted for BMWs normally aspirated 3. 0-liter inline six.

The maximum 240-bhp is achieved at 5,000 rpm, which also happens to be 1,500 rpm lower than in the normally-aspirated 3. 0-liter inline six. Its the same story when it comes to torque output; the 260 lb-ft arrives at an extremely low 1,250 rpm – or 1,500 rpm earlier than the inline six. According to BMW, the exhaust streams leaving the two pairs of cylinders are kept separate to allow very low exhaust back pressure at low engine rpm and the exhaust gas pulses to be optimally managed and translated into powerful rotation of the turbine oštrice, without a delay in throttle response.

The High Precision Injection direct-injection system also helps to improve efficiency. Centrally positioned between the valves, solenoid injectors with a maximum injection pressure of 200 bar (2,900 psi) precisely control the fuel supply. More power for less fuel usage is something any car fan will appreciate.

The new engine should also at the tug heartstrings of BMW fans whove come to idolize the Bavarian brands past four-cylinder-powered sports sedans, like the legendarni 2002tii and E30 M3. Both had fantastic four little-cylinders under their hoods, as did BMWs wildly powerful Formula effects in the 1980s. When tuned for qualifying, these 1. 5-liter units offered well in excess of 1,000-bhp. With that kind of track record – pun intended – weve no doubt were going to love BMWs new engine. The biggest question is whether this smaller and lighter four-cylinder manages to fill an entry-level or sports-oriented (i. e. skuplje) slot in BMWs lineup.

For now, BMW has not said which models will receive the engine when it arrives later this year. Though the obvious choices seem to be the 1-Series, 3-Series, and the new X1 crossover vozila.
