An open-air version of the new Series 2 introduced earlier this month during the Detroit Auto Show will be sold in the U. S. and will reach production late this year.
BMW board member Herbert Diess confirmed the rough timeline to Wards Auto during the Detroit Auto Show earlier this month. The company is gearing up to launch the coupe version that AutoRepMan.com had the chance to drive this month in Las Vegas.

The current 1 Series will be replaced by the 2 Series, positioned as a small rear-wheel drive sport coupe under the Series 3, which used to hold that place in the lineup. BMWs plan was always to move the coupe i kabriolet modeli to even-numbered nameplates with the same change taking place for the new 4 Serije.
Diess said the open-air 2 Serije will likely be a soft top, hinting that the brands top brass hasnt made a final decision on whether or not a convertible hard top is in the cards. The new Series 2 grows slightly compared to the car it replaces and the high-performance M235i is already being anointed by reviewers as a spiritual successor to the E46 M3.
