Y teimlad llawen o lywio gyda'r throttle

Gyriannau diweddar yn y Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe a Peugeot RCZ R yn pwysleisio hyfrydwch cyferbyniol peiriannau blaen a gyriant cefn Darllen AutoRepMan am unrhyw gyfnod – dywedwch bedwar mater, neu werth wythnos o ddarllen ar y we – ac mae'n debyg y byddwch yn casglu, pan ddaw'n fater o yrru adloniant, ein bod yn tueddu i ffafrio gyriant olwyn gefn i'r blaen.

Wedi dweud hynny, bu digon o geir gyrru blaen gogoneddus y gellid eu llywio ar y troell hefyd, drwy godi neu blu'r cyflymydd ganol tro. Maen nhw'n dechrau gyda'r Mini gwreiddiol, yn rhedeg i'r Peugeot 205 GTI, amrywiol Fords poeth, y rhan fwyaf o beiriannau RenaultSport a llawer o rai eraill ar wahân.

Fodd bynnag, nid oes amheuaeth bod y RCZ R yn beth da iawn, yn enwedig ar gyfer y 270bhp ysblennydd y mae'n ei wau o'i 1. modur tyrbin 6 litr. Nid yw'r C63 AMG Coupe, sy'n costio mwy na dwbl tag pris RCZ Rs. Mae'r pwerdy AMGs yn darparu digon o bŵer go-wallgof hefyd, a chyda thrac sain yr un mor beiddgar, dwfn. Mae cydbwysedd uwch Mercs yn amlwg ar unwaith.
Mae'r Peugeot yn teimlo fel ei bwysoli fel morthwyl, mae ei chassis gwych bob amser yn gorfod ymladd dosbarthiad màs y ceir (y rhan fwyaf ohonynt ar y blaen), tra bod y Benz yn fwy gwastad yn caniatáu iddo drwyn i blygu gyda brwdfrydedd heb ei orfodi.
A chyda 450 pwys troedfedd o drorque yn sgwario sipiau ei deiars cefn, mae'n hawdd addasu'r llwybr C63s hwn gyda'r throttle, yn enwedig yn y gwlyb.
Wrth gwrs, mae p'un a allwch addasu'r llwybr hwnnw yn ôl yr union swm cywir yn rhan o'r her a'r wefr o yrru gyrrwr cefn cryf, a pham ei orau i adael yr ESP ymlaen nes eich bod yn gyfarwydd.
Ond mae'r cyfle i feistroli'r agwedd hon ar repertoire ceir gyriant cefn yn rhywbeth y gallwch ei fwynhau mewn gyrrwr blaen, yn enwedig os nad yw'n symud o gwmpas llawer pan fyddwch yn rhyddhau'r cyflymydd.
Ffaith yw, mae llywio gyda'r throttle yn un o'r llawenydd mawr o yrru perfformiad. Ac roedd y ddau beiriant rhagorol hyn yn tanlinellu'r ffaith honno i gyd eto.

Recent drives in the Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe and Peugeot RCZ R emphasise the contrasting delights of front and rear-drive machinery Read AutoRepMan for any length of time – say four issues, or a weeks worth of web reading – and youll probably gather that when it comes to driving entertainment, we tend to prefer rear-wheel drive to front.
Why? Because rear-drivers are better balanced when powering through bends, making it easier to plot your desired line, besides allowing you to use the accelerator as a steering aid by killing understeer with an extra slug of power. And of course, you can drift a rear-drive car.
That said, there have been plenty of glorious front-drive cars that could be steered on the throttle too, by lifting off or feathering the accelerator mid-bend. They start with the original Mini, run to the Peugeot 205 GTI, various hot Fords, most RenaultSport machines and many others besides.
And the contrast between these drivelines has been rammed home to me this week with steers in Peugeots RCZ R and the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe 507 edition, both of which Ive been sampling – and enjoying hugely – for the World Car of the Year awards, for which I do jury service.
Be in no doubt, though, that the RCZ R is a very fine thing, not least for the spectacular 270bhp it wrings from its 1. 6-litre turbo motor. More impressive still is that the front tyres can put this power on the road without spilling much of it, even when you turn the electronic aids off.
True, it writhes and squirms slightly, but the grip and traction are amazing, aided by its torsen diff and Peugeot Sports extensive chassis tuning. Yes despite its poise, pace and pliancy, you cant steer the RCZ R on the throttle that much, and certainly not like you could its 306 Rallye ancestor.
Nor the C63 AMG Coupe, which admittedly costs more than double the RCZ Rs price tag. The AMGs powerplant delivers plenty of go-crazy power too, and with an equally beguiling, deep-chested soundtrack. The Mercs superior balance is immediately obvious.
The Peugeot feels like its weighted like a hammer, its superb chassis always having to fight the cars mass distribution (most of which is up front), whereas the more evenly spread heft of the Benz allows it to nose into bends with unforced enthusiasm.
And with 450lb ft of torque squashing the sipes of its rear tyres, its dead easy to adjust this C63s trajectory with the throttle, especially in the wet.
Of course, whether you can adjust that trajectory by precisely the right amount is part of the challenge and thrill of driving a potent rear-driver, and why its best to leave the ESP on until youre familiar.
But the chance to master this aspect of a rear-drive cars repertoire is something you cant enjoy in a front driver, especially if it doesnt move around much when you release the accelerator.
Fact is, steering with the throttle is one of the great joys of performance driving. And these two excellent machines underlined that fact all over again.
