Several years ago Chrysler became the first company to create a real test track within the exhibit hall at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show. It gave visitors the opportunity to take actual, albeit slow, test-drives along an off-road course in a variety of 2011 Jeep models. Not surprisingly, it proved to be a great addition to the auto show and the idea has since been adopted at other auto shows, either indoors where there is room or outside where the weather is suitable.

If you live near Chicago you can get the chance to try out vehicles on four different tracks at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show. Chrysler is back with its off-road track and it has been joined by Toyota that has one set up to look like a construction zone. Toyota is allowing visitors to try out the 2011 Toyota Tundra and Tacoma.

Chevrolet has a short course where you can try out the 2011 Volt, although it is only allowing visitors in the cars as passengers. I took a ride and found the information given by the driver was effective at explaining what the Volt is all about.

Ford has a really small course for visitors to experience the 2011 Explorer, but only as a passenger. It includes a teeter-totter pivot ramp which helps turn the course into a more of a roller coaster ride, so to speak. The idea is to demonstrate the Explorers ability to climb a 22-degree incline and then how the Explorers Hill Descent Control helps an explorer descend steep hills safely.
