At the Rallye Monte Carlo Historique, the famous Mini that won the Monte Carlo Rally in the 1960s had a chance meeting with the new Prodrive-developed Mini WRC that will compete at selected events in the 2011 World Rally Championship. Rauno Aaltonen of Finland, who won the 1967 Monte Carlo Rally in a works Mini, was greeted at the end of the Historique by drivers Kris Meeke and Dani Sordo, who will revive the brands rallying tradition this year. Also in Monte Carlo to greet Aaltonen was another famous Mini driver, Paddy Hopkirk from Northern Ireland, who won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964. Said Hopkirk: Its very interesting to be here, and I was delighted to see Rauno looking so well and the car looking so good. It is just great to see it all being revived. When we won it was not just motorsport news, but front page news and I even got a telegram from the Beatles and the Prime Minister and I was given the keys to Belfast. I do admire the talents of these guys. Kris took me around the Prodrive test track in the Mini WRC and it was absolutely fantastic. Indeed, its great to see Mini back in rallying, and I look forward to seeing the teams full assault on the WRC in 2012. Whats more, Im struck by one thing—just how small the original Mini is versus the new Mini WRC, which is powered by a BMW Motorsport-developed 1. 6-liter 4-cylinder and is based on the Countryman model.
