French automaker Renault has formally dropped all charges against three executives accused of selling top secret information to Chinese manufacturers. The three execs were supposed to have received funds in secret bank accounts, all in exchange for handing over details concerning Renaults multi-billion dollar investment in electric vehicles.

Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn has promised to forego a bonus this year and submitted a personal apology to the three executives charged in the case. All three have been offered their old jobs back, along with undisclosed compensation. Ghosn has also declined the resignation of COO Patrick Pelata, who linked his reputation with a successful outcome of the investigation into the (now non-existent) scandal.

The three executives were quickly fired and the Renault pledged to out all wrong-doers. The only problem facing Renault: none of it actually happened. According to multiple news outlets, there were no secret bank accounts. There was also no Chinese automaker lurking in the shadows, tempting competitors with money for trade secrets into the (potentially) lucrative market for electric vehicles. Renaults over-eager security team seems to have fooled everyone – including itself – into thinking there was industrial spying going on when none existed.
