When BMW got involved with Rover back in 1994 it took six years before realizing the enormity of the challenge that lay ahead in turning the brand round. The Bavarians glibly called it The English Patient without conceding that the German doctors hadnt diagnosed the ills or delivered a cure. Is history about to repeat itself in Sweden?

I ask this as twice in the past 14 days Saab has suspended production because it failed to pay key suppliers. The waters have muddied further with the unexpected announcement of the impending resignation of Saabs respected president and CEO, Jan Ake Jonsson. This was rapidly followed by the re-emergence of Russian billionaire, Vladimir Antonov as a potential saviour intent on investing $71 million to acquire a 30 percent stake in Saab.

Antonov, you might recall was the main reason why GM refused to sell Saab to the Spyker consortium, over alleged illicit dealings, in the first place until he withdrew. To complicate matters further any change in ownership structure has to be approved by Swedens National Debt Office, the Swedish government and the European Investment Bank.
