Volkswagen will be adding a Golf plug-in hybrid variant to its lineup, complementing the sporty GTI and diesel GTD models.
Called the Volkswagen GTE, the plug-in hybrid will feature similar specs to the Audi A3 e-tron, as the German automaker continues to electrify its lineup to meet strict European emissions regulations. Expect a 1. 4-liter four-cylinder engine paired to an electric motor to provide 204 hp.
As for the naming, Volkswagen hopes to market the GTE as an electric version of the GTI (GT Electric) in hopes that itll continue to be viewed as a sporty hatchback rather than a boring hybrid. The GTE is expected to accelerate to 62 mph from a standstill in 7. 6 seconds and will have a top speed of 135 mph. The GTE will be able to travel up to 31 miles on electric power alone at speeds of up to 81 mph.
