Coin Toss Win Goes To Former West Champ
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Greg Pursley and Derek Thorn won the two NASCAR K&N Pro Series qualifying heat races for the UNOH Battle At The Beach on Tuesday at Daytona International Speedway.
Pursley, hailing from Newhall, Calif., selected the inside position after a coin toss between the two heat winners toi determine the pole sitter. By choosing the inside position the entire field from the first heat followed in order of their finish to make up the inside column for the main event. Pursley won the 2011 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West title and was championship runner up last season.
In the first heat Pursley, who led two of the three practice sessions, claimed the win in front of his 16-year-old Gene Price Motorsports teammate Cameron Hayley and CJ Faison.
Kyle Larson, winner of Monday night’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model race and front-row starter in the upcoming NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event, found some trouble on the track and finished eighth.
Thorn edged Ben Kennedy at the line in the second heat followed by Cale Conley in third.
Kennedy, great-grandson of NASCAR founder Bill France Sr., is the first member of the France family to race at the legendary Daytona track.
The feature race for the K&N Pro Series is scheduled for an approximate 8:30 p.m. start following the completion of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event. Coverage on SPEED and MRN will begin at 7 p.m. this evening.
