Nation's Historic Cars Get the Recognition Buildings Have Enjoyed Since 1966. In 1966, Congress passed the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). That created the National Register of Historic Places, which puts those plaques in front of important old buildings. The National Park Service administers the program, and the register now covers more than a million properties. To date there has been no such curation of this country's rich automotive history.
