Kaltenborn: This is normal when the pilot has sponsors

Last year Sauber had a successful season, finishing in sixth place in the Cup of designers. On the eve of the new season, the team leader Moniz, Kaltenborn told about the pilots and the expectations from the championship and the challenges that need to be addressed before 2014 year.

Question: it Seems that after serious progress Sauber in 2013 all have to start first by inviting two new riders with different styles of flying. As a small team will be able to deal with this?
Moniz, Kaltenborn: It's not such a radical change compared with previous years. Esteban Gutierrez we know well, so the differences aren't so great. We not only followed his career and supported him, we have effectively worked with him ever since, when he was just a young racer, so we have an advantage over those who do not know all the characteristics of their recruits. We know the strengths and weaknesses of Esteban, saw his progress in recent years. On the other hand, he knows the team, knows how it works, and what we expect from him. It is a completely different situation, so it is safe to say that we know each other. Now he goes into another state, becoming the main driver of the team - such experience as yet.

Of course, with Nico Hulkenberg the situation is completely different, but here we have opredellennoe advantage, because he is an experienced professional. When he first came to us, we realized that the process of its adaptation to the team will be much faster, because both sides know what they want from each other, and just have to find a common language. So, in comparison with previous years, the changes are not as radical as they seem at first glance.

Question: Sauber were many talented young riders, who then went to other teams. Other popular sports such transitions are paid. In your opinion, should there be something similar in Formula 1?
Moniz, Kaltenborn: No, I will not support this idea from the perspective of our team. We prefer to develop independently, it gives the opportunity to modify the car to such a level that the driver chooses to stay with us. We have already reached that level, when we are not actively engaged in finding pilots - all racers who played for us, they came in Sauber. It is quite a lot, but now we must take the next step.

Question: Small teams can afford to sign contracts with young pilots who have no money?
Moniz, Kaltenborn: For me, all the discussions about "cost-drivers" is groundless. We find that many of the partners, or sponsors support riders from the beginning of their careers. A good example is Sergio Perez. He was part of the racing school'escuderia Telmex. These people supported him from the very beginning, so it is logical that when he rose to the top of Motorsport, they came along with him. In the championship many leading pilots, which resulted in F1 its partners who supported them from the very beginning of my career. We do not razvivaem rent-drivers drivers, the speakers in the youth series: this is normal when the pilot is sposare. Why not extend those same standards to Formula 1? Then we will not have such discussions.

Of course, it would be nice if in the Formula 1 also drew attention to the level of expenditure that needs to do something. For many years we see how the team is dependent on the economic situation. And I'm not just talking about small teams, and Pro sports in General. In such circumstances, we cannot expect that we will always receive substantial payments from the organizers of the championship. We must find a way to respond to such changes.

Question: In 2013 in the championship will be more of a novice than in previous years. Simultaneously, the championship has left experienced riders who do not have financial support. What does this mean?
Moniz, Kaltenborn The situation makes me wonder if she really is. This will not be beneficial for the championship, because in Formula 1 should be the best racers, and not necessarily they must pay for their performances. Let's face it: young riders coming into the championship, not only because they have money. Formula 1 has always been changes in the composition of the pilots, and no one associated it with money. Anyone who comes to Formula 1 - a professional of the highest level, but the number of vacancies in the championship is limited, so all teams are looking for naushie options. Who would have acted differently?

Question: Inviting Niko Hulkenberg, you got a racer with a good track record. What do you expect from him this season?
Moniz, KaltenbornWe expect that he will continue to show the speed that he had last year. He used the opportunity that has been in Force India - it gave us a strong impression. This sometimes lacked our team. At Niko we see strengths that will allow to use the potential of the machine. Last year we heard repeatedly that Sauber huge potential, but was unable to fully realize. We expect that Niko will help us to do this and thanks to its experience is to ask the engineers direction.

Question: Rookie Esteban Gutierrez will replace Kamui Kobayashi. Kamui has proven resourceful, organized online campaign to raise funds. Were you surprised that the most successful Japanese racer in the history of Formula 1 was not able to find sponsors?
Moniz, Kaltenborn: Yes, for me it was a surprise. When Kamui came to us, he didn't have a sponsor, but we believe in his talent - it was the right step. He spent several vivid racing for Sauber, his podium at Suzuka was very emotional, I've never seen a crowd so welcomed by the pilot. Kamui is a great team player, he did much to strengthen the team spirit, so it was surprising that such a man could not find support in Japan, where so much love Motorsport. This is another warning, indicating that we should change something. However, I want to clarify: we did not give Kamui no promises regarding season 2013th year.

Question: Last season was successful for Sauber. Will the team be able to repeat this result?
Moniz, Kaltenborn: Hope. Moreover, I hope that we will achieve more. First of all, we place our hopes on the new machine. We took last year A31 and focused on eliminating its weaknesses. Secondly, we have a very stable staff is very important. Plus we have two pilots, which, as we think, will help realize the potential of the Sauber. We are well prepared!

Question: a lot of teams say that this season is, in fact, the transition when you need to pay attention to the modernization of the current machine, but to work on a totally different project 2014 year. What is the situation in Sauber?
Moniz, KaltenbornLike most teams, we have already started work on a machine sample 2014 year. Given the limitations that we have, we are faced with the difficult task of resource allocation: on the one hand, we need to do debugging, S32, in order to remain competitive, on the other, it is necessary to develop a new car. The challenge is to understand what resources, human and financial, you must send on a particular project, and when it should be done.

Question: you have a plan in case the results will not meet your expectations? At what point will have to renounce work with the current machine in order to focus on preparing for the 2014 year?
Moniz, KaltenbornNo, a private team cannot afford it. Our future will be affected this year. There is no reason to think that we will not be competitive. I believe that due to the stability of the rules we will be able to catch up to the leaders. This should give us an advantage.

Question: Many people believe that because of the new engines and the rest of the 2014 year is very costly to the teams. It scares you?
Moniz, Kaltenborn: Not much. (laughs) I'm sure that in 2014 a lot will depend on motors and gearboxes, and not from the chassis. If you recall, we started to work on the technical regulations, and to look at what we've come, we can see that the implementation of many ideas while I was deferred and is reasonable. However, an ongoing debate about the engines and gearboxes, and I think it will be a decisive factor in the next season. Whose power unit in combination with transmission will be better, will benefit. But the situation is difficult.

If we talk about the expenses more than likely will have to spend on the engine, so providers of motors have to think about what they want from the sport. They want them to buy engines or not? If you don't want, you end up in the championship will remain three or four teams. Even if these commands will put the start of the five or six cars, they will be able to obtain from Formula 1 the same profit as of now. I'm not just talking about financial benefits, but also about the image. On the supply motors lies a certain responsibility, but they also benefit from it.

Question: I Think the manufacturers of engines understand this?
Moniz, Kaltenborn: I don't know, but it's not my problem.

Question: What are your three wishes for the 2013 year?
Moniz, Kaltenborn: I wish that we had a successful year, continued to develop the brand Sauber and continued to use our know-how in other areas of the business.
