Følelser, arv og godt vejr gør Daytona 24 Timer, en must-see motorsport eventLast nat stod jeg ser 60 sportsvogne tordnende hen til mig på 200 før bremser for en tur på Daytona International Speedway. Det var den mest instinktive motorsport erfaring Ive nogensinde har mødt. Lap efter lap, de drivere der fulgte, at opretholde en svimlende hastighed, utrolig koncentration og, især, når du indtaster slå tre ajour, store bolde. Daytona 24 Timer er ikke den første sportscar løb Jeg har været til – langt fra – men det er en, der har fået mig til at forstå, hvad endurance racing handler om. På Daytona, du føler dig som en del af showet, og du kan komme tæt på det. Selv hvis du går på pension komfort i et hotelværelse, i et par timer, du er tæt nok til den råhed af det hele til at virkelig føle de følelser af de teams, kørere og fans. Det hjælper selvfølgelig også, at Daytona er et ikonisk sted, og uanset hvor du går rundt her, er du mindet om og undervist i historie og arv af sted på alle tidspunkter. Og mens denne historie, der underbygger den særlige karakter af begivenhed, race har alt, hvad en moderne fan kunne ønske sig. Initiativtagerne gøre alt for at sikre, at fans kommer i første række, uanset om de er på camping på indmarken eller nyde den ophøjede atmosfære af Champions Club - som, efter en rimelig daglig gebyr, er åben for alle. I denne weekend, som en almindelig fan, har jeg været tættere på at de chauffører, garager, mekanik, track - stort set alle de action - end jeg har oplevet andre steder. Fordi løbet er 24 timer lang tid, jeg har haft mulighed for at se fra flere steder, alle af dem tilbyder en uforstyrret udsigt handling på sporet. Jeg har spist godt og elskede kammeratskab blandt fans - lange i Florida natten - at det kun er et 24-timers løb som dette kan tillade sig. Hvad om Le Mans, spørger du måske? Forskellen her er, at du stadig kan komme op i nærheden af det hegn på stort set alle vantage stedet. Disse følelser har fanget mig som en overraskelse. Lad os se det i øjnene, sportscar racing er en lang vej korte af Nascar og IndyCar i USA i både profil og publikum numre, men med sammenlægningen af Nascar ' s Grand-Am serien, og den Amerikanske Le Mans-serie, race planlægning IMSA er overbevist om, at dets nye Tudor Forenede SportsCar Championship vil bringe den herlighed dage tilbage til sportscar racing i USA. Fra hvad jeg har set i denne weekend, har de al mulig ret til at være sikker, og hvad mere er, Daytona kunne være nøglen til at gøre deres krav på at være verdens centrum af motorsport bære mere sandhed, end de måske gør i øjeblikket. Med podiet i dag løft franske, portugisiske og Brasilianske flag (desværre, ingen Brit denne gang), det er en virkelig international serien, og vinder mere og mere global opmærksomhed. Emotion, heritage and great weather make the Daytona 24 Hours a must-see motorsport eventLast night I stood watching 60 sports cars thundering towards me at 200mph before braking for turn one at Daytona International Speedway. It was the most visceral motorsport experience Ive ever encountered. Lap after lap the drivers came, maintaining breathtaking speed, incredible concentration and, especially when entering turn three abreast, huge balls. The Daytona 24 Hours is not the first sportscar race Ive been to – far from it – but it is the one that has made me understand what endurance racing is all about. At Daytona, you feel part of the show, and you can get right up close to it. Even if you retire to the comfort of a hotel room for a few hours, you're close enough to the rawness of it all to really feel the emotions of the teams, drivers and fans. It helps, of course, that Daytona is an iconic venue, and wherever you go around here you are reminded and taught about the history and the heritage of the place at all times. And while that history underpins the special nature of the event, the race has everything a modern fan could want. Organisers do everything to ensure that fans come first, whether they're camping on the infield or enjoying the rarefied atmosphere of the Champions Club – which, for a reasonable daily fee, is open to anyone. This weekend, as a regular fan, I have been closer to the drivers, the garages, the mechanics, the track – pretty much all the action – than I have experienced anywhere else. Because the race is 24 hours long, I've had the chance to watch from multiple locations, all of them offering an uninterrupted view of the action on track. I've eaten well and loved the camaraderie amongst fans – long into the Florida night – that only a 24-hour race like this can afford. What about Le Mans, you might ask? The difference here is that you can still get up close to that fence at pretty much every vantage spot. These emotions have caught me by surprise. Let's face it, sportscar racing is a long way short of Nascar and IndyCar in the US in both profile and audience numbers, but with the merger of Nascar's Grand-Am series and the American Le Mans series, race organiser IMSA is confident that its new Tudor United SportsCar Championship will bring the glory days back to sportscar racing in the US. From what I've seen this weekend, they have every right to be confident, and whats more, Daytona could be the key to making their claim to be the world centre of motorsports carry more truth than perhaps it does at the moment. With the podium today hoisting French, Portuguese and Brazilian flags (sadly, no Brit this time), it's a truly international series and gaining more and more global attention. Sure, it's a long way to come, but I would urge anyone with a passion for motorsport to put a visit to the 24-hour race here high up on your bucket list of sporting events to attend.
