Survivor: Suzuki DR-Z400
The motorcycle class "Enduro" not in vain called dual-purpose - dual purpose: it is such a motorcycle allows its owner during the week to travel on public roads to the place of performance of the employment duties and back, and on the weekend by downloading the backpack, jerk "in the pampas". This was guided by the Suzuki designers in the development of his timeless hit DR-Z400.
Suzuki DR-Z400: Enduo, 1999-2003. r. , 398 cm³, 40 l. c. , 130,000-320,000 rubles. HISTORY. Suzuki DR-Z400S was presented to the public in 1999 as a legitimate development of the DR350 model, and already in 2000 it was recognized as the best double-use motorcycle. By 2002, it had been equipped with adjustable suspension from an off-road version of "E", which finally fixed the DR-Z400S dominance in its segment. DR-Z400 (Kickstarter only) and DR-Z400E (receiving electric power), which appeared at the same time in the production line of Suzuki, were always mansion: they were not intended for use on public roads because they occupied their sports and physical cultural niche and were not among the top selling hits. However, the main difference between DR-Z400/E is large on the 9 L. (and this is 22.5 percent!) the engine power has not given (and still doesn't give) rest to the owners of the "legal" road "holes". It was "removed" from the same 398 cubic feet of the 49 "horses", thanks mainly to other breakers and carburetors of the shillebal type (famous in the people as "flat-throttle"), so the first mode of effective tuning of the DR-Z400S/SM engine was provided by the same manufacturer. In 2005, in response to the desire of the market to get "factory supermotor" the DR-Z400SM was introduced. It is noteworthy that in the construction of the SM version, Suzuki's designers did not save on the minimum change set: in addition to the 17-inch wheels (by the way, not by the way, but Excel!), which were rimmed into road tires, and the more powerful front brake, the rear suspension DR-Z400SM got a pendulum of the variable section, and ahead of it was approved a serious "shiverback" from Showa with a 47 mm diameter pens borrowed from RM. By 2007, instead of a steel 22-millimeter handlebar, SM had an "adult" aluminium "fethbar" from Renthal and received sliders from the front and rear axlesIn addition, during the time of the many "strategic partnership" between Suzuki and Kawasaki, the latter produced the KLX400 model, which is essentially the same DR-Z400, with the exception of plastic parts and a number of accessories. So don't be surprised if you meet "Suzu" under the "Kadia" face. There is a peculiarity in the internal Japanese versions: first, the head optics are noticably smaller and, accordingly, the height of the light, second, the height of the saddle is slightly less ... due to its thickness. And one more point: despite the popular belief that the production of DR-Z400 was terminated in 2010, and S-and SM-version still releases the Suzuki Manufacturing of America Corporation in the United States. Therefore, the 2011 release of the release is quite real. Simply the carbuy-engine action was no longer in line with the new European environmental regulations, so the foreheads of the Japanese were introduced to stop the supply of "holes" to EuropeBut Russia has not yet entered the rules for motorcycles in Russia. 1999: Suzuki DR-Z400, DR-Z400E, DR-Z400S. The S-version that has been approved for use on public roads has been particularly popular. 2002: Suzuki DR-Z400S. S-version of "holes" received regulated suspension from Suzuki DR-Z400E. In the following year, Suzuki fixed the problematic burden of the GRM. 2005: Suzuki DR-Z400SM. The company presented to the audience "factory super-mothard", which is an S-version of advanced pendant and 17-inch wheels. 2007: Suzuki DR-Z400SM. The motorcycle was given a "thick" steering and sliders on the front and rear axles. WHAT FOR? The choice of a specific version of Suzuki DR-Z400 is determined by the goals and objectives of the motorcycle. So ...DR-Z400/E-strictly sports equipment not certified for use on public roads and, accordingly, shipped to Russia without a PTSYes, there were separate "Eshchs", which after the mirror and sometimes even the direction indicators were imported as "just DR-Z400" and were supplied by PTS, but this is the exception rather than the rule. Despite this, the applicability of the motorcycle is quite broad: from banal poets around the summer dacha and trips day off to quite serious competitions on Enduo and Rally raids of the level of the Cup or the championship of Russia. DR-Z400S is probably the biggest member of the DR-Z400 family. In fact, this is a material embodied in the collective image of an unassuming and reliable dual-use bike, and the practice willingly confirms this. DR-Z400S is a universal multi-purpose motorcycle, where it is possible to successfully move around the city (and move very dynamically), to transport passengers, to pump out of off-road driving (if not fanaticism, to the crossroad) and even to go to the far outboard. Another important plus DR-Z400 is its reliabilityOf course, if you do not forget about the timely maintenance (which, according to the manufacturer's recommendations, should be done in the same frequency as for most road motorcycles). The superguard DR-Z400SM is equally good in both urban transport and the role of the adrenaline generator-everything depends on the desires and ambitions of the rider. Although "popular opinion" is sure that the "hole" is short of the engine, this motorcycle is able to leave behind and charged quarts in dense urban traffic. And the great pendants and brakes (especially in combination with a very small mass) allow, without exaggeration, to create miracles in the stream, changing the direction of the SM movement with almost the force of thought. In addition, long-energy-intensive padders will be a good aid for amateurs to avoid the traffic jams, and no curb or staircase will prevent the realization of the intended useBut, of course, on desolate night streets or country roads, the driver of the "hole" will feel a bit off the plate, because even the bold "Taziki" will be overrun. And S-and SM-versions of the "hole" are distinguished by a huge motor resource, which, combined with a large interservice interval, allows to operate these motorcycles in normal daily transport mode. At the same time, despite the sports roots, the DR-Z has a good light technician, a comfortable seat (by the standards of its class, of course) and even the presence of passenger feet. Nevertheless, the comfort of a motorcycle of this class, especially in long-time travel, is very notional. Even the impeccable power of the suspension does not compensate for the rigid seat width with the palm and complete absence of wind protection. But, for example, the author of these lines went on his DR-Z400SM from Murmansk to Moscow through Kirishi (and this is no small 2000 km) in one sitting, without any negative sensations. Except maybe too small for such a promenade of benzobas. WHERE ARE WE LOOKING? Today, there are no difficulties with the search for "holes": proposals on the domestic market b/the technique is quite a lot. In addition, these motorcycles are taking orders from both the US and Japan. The last year of the release of the DR-Z400S/SM SM in 2009, the E-series ceased to be formally imported two years earlier. TEENING. It is quite natural that such a longevity in the market as DR-Z400 has not been overtaken by the attention of the producers of "tuning": the selection of components from third parties gives the owner of any version of "melon" an unparalleled space for creativity, from the banal styling to the construction of serious sports vehicles with an engine larger than initially, the working volume. Engine. The insufficient power of the DR-Z400S/SM engine has become a parable in the pagan: not everyone is satisfied with it, to put it mildly, sports biker dynamics. This can be done in a variety of ways, starting with the classic installation of the recorder, increasing the air intake of the air intake and installing the corresponding DinoJet, and ending with the actual new engine of the larger working volume by increasing the diameter of the cylinder, piston moves, or both. There are whales in the market that allow for both a small and a significant change in the engine's working volume (and geometry). For example, replacing the piston-piston group by the whale from Athena, JE Pistons, or MaxRPMs will produce a more short motor of 435, 440, 450 or 455 cm3, replacement of the cap, jackass, and piston from the HotReds or MaxRRRRRRRRRRRRPMs, and the combination of the larger cylinder diameter and piston stroke at the same time with the help of the Big Bore & Stroker kits, MaxRPMs, or Falicon will increase the working volume to 465, 480, 485, 493 and even 510 cm3. The issue is only in finance-the cost of topping kits is located in the area of $1000-1200 in the US. Stars. The dynamic/traction characteristics of the motorcycle are not difficult to adjust under the required conditions by a change in the gear ratio of the main gears; the selection of leading and driven stars is enormous and will make it possible to make out of the "hole" and the asphalt traveler, and the trophy or machine. Kickstarter. With the active off-road operation DR-Z400S, the installation of the Kickstarter is very popular, for the benefit of a complete set in the American online store is available for $200-250. Alternatively, you can simply order the original KickStarter for version "E" (part number 26300-29813) through official dealers or "grey" suppliers of spare parts; the manufacturer writes that this quiche is only suitable for DR-Z400E and is not intended to be installed on DR-Z400S, but the installation goes without problems, except that the details of the decompressor are not in demand, as the "e-sky" engine does not imply its presence. The sign. The main redecks of the "hole" are related to the reduced height of the seat. Reaching this rather simple (and budget) method-replacing the native links of the rear suspension system on the link from Soupy's Performance or Kouba. These are different lengths, which actually affects the degree of reduction of the height by the seat-for example, 20, 32 and 45 mm in the case of Kouba. However, after this the other complexity-the length of the home side stand may be superfluous and will need to be shortened. The linky package usually oscillates around $100 in all the same civilian online stores. Seat/stuffing. Another way to make landing on DR-Z400 is to replace the seat. The replacement of the seat may also have another aim-to increase the comfort level of the motorcycle. There is a lot of market offers: Corbin, Rick Mayer, or Renazco Racing will cost $350-500 (and do not forget to add the shipping charge), you can save money by ordering the seat from the SDG for $150-200. There is also a more budget option-replacing only stuffing and "hide" seats: Guts, FX, DY offers various options, prices start at $75. The masonings on the frame. It is a very useful element of tuning which allows to preserve the varnishing surface of the frame of the "hole" in the area of the axis of fixing of the pendulum in the original form. Protective linings are recommended for all versions-and off-road and asphalt; aluminium, plastic and carbonated. Carter's protection. In principle, the normal metal defense is perfectly capable of handling the hardships and privations of off-road use, but if there are plans for quite lengthy expeditions, you can be insured. There are many proposals for the protection of the crankcase; mainly aluminum products are much more than their own protection, the area, but also carboniovs, which are primarily a protection for the version of SM. Fuel tank. The replacement of the native tank (though it would be more appropriate to say "reservoir") to a tank of greater capacity helps to improve autonomy. The producers are well known-Acerbis, IMS, Safary Tanks (they are an Aqualine), Clarke, only need to determine the required volume: a little more than the native, 12-15 l, in significant-17-18 l. There are 28 and even 30-liter fuel farms. Many manufacturers make tanks of semi-transparent plastic, which is very convenient in terms of controlling the amount of fuel in the tank. Prices are in the range of $300-700. The dashboard. A dashboard with multiple functions has two significant disadvantages. First, there is no tachometer on it, and secondly, because of its small size, it may suffer when it falls. The dashboard views for DR-Z400 issue TrailTech (the Vapor line) and the Koso. Moreover, they are not priced in any comparison with their native Suzuki: a complete set consisting of the dashboard, connectors and necessary sensors will cost $130-200 without delivery. Wind-defense. Treat a tiny little box that covers the "cleaning", like wind protection, of course, that's funny. If long road trips are expected, it makes sense to install a high wind shield. There's a little in the market, but there's still a choice. Prices range from $80 to $210. Apart from the windshield, it is very useful (especially in the rain and cold) to protect the levers: hidden behind plastic "purest" hands is much less cold, and levers do not cling to branches and breaking down in crashes. Wheels of wheels. It is very useful for asphalt operation, as it helps to save the front brake subport and lower parts of plugs when falling on this abrasive substance. PRICES. The price of "melons" starts from 130-140 thousand. For the first years of the first year of the production, it is estimated to reach 300 to 320,000 motorcycles. for the "official" units of 2009 or the newly imported motorcycles from 2010 to 2011. CHOICE. Engine. The engine is a huge resource. Of the problems-the high noise of the GRM drive (constructive feature), which was on motorcycles before 2007. Suzuki later removed the defect by changing the design of the GRM chain. Transmission. It would be desirable to check whether the first gear, especially "hot", is clearly included. In the case of irregular oil change, this is sometimes problematic; all relatively inexpensive-from oil substitution at the initial stage to replacement of a number of parts with a total cost of about 3,000 roubles. Brakes. On DR-Z400S, DR-Z400SM is great. The only "but"-when SM (daily and prolonged stopper) is overactive, the guide rails of the front brake disc are broken, which will show the floppy disk. In the initial stage it is not critical, but it is time to think about substituting. In addition, when trying to install the Enbad Wheels on SM, it is necessary to leave the brake disc "asphalt", which may not be very good for off-road. Air filter. Quite a lot of them are selling motorcycles on which no one has ever changed an air filter. The sign. As with any other motorcycle, at least sporadically moving off the asphalt, the red rear suspension system requires maintenance. In the absence of such a fiddle, the creaking and brushing and grease will be treated in the initial stages. The front fork is that DR-Z400S is practically unkilled on DR-Z400SM if the feathers have no mechanical damage, which can lead not only to the fall but also to the absence (on the SM-the "overturn") of the native protection of feathers.
