A couple of hours after I handed over the keys to the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Wagon I had been driving for a week, I received a phone call from a salesperson at the local Cadillac dealer asking if I still had the car.

She was the third salesperson to ask if they could show off the car to prospective customers. I was able to oblige with two earlier requests and the first customer to ride in the car ordered one on the spot, trading in his BMW 335 Wagon. The second potential owner was looking to trade in his Dodge Magnum SRT8.

In all my years of borrowing cars for review this is the first time one has garnered so much interest from a dealer.

Its not surprising as the 2011 CTS-V Wagon is sensational. Its a true enthusiasts car that delivers great performance thanks to its supercharged 556 bhp 6. 2-liter V8 engine with 551 lb-ft of torque. The drive train is identical to that in the CTS-V sedan and Coupe. Personally I think the Wagon is far more attractive than either of the other two CTS-V models and is far more practical as it has 25 cu ft of storage space with the rear seats in place and 58 cu ft when they are folded down.

The CTS-V Wagon romps away from a start when you put your foot on the gas. The engine revs so freely that I hit the rev limiter a few times and it has so much torque that you can accelerate onto a freeway and shift straight from second to sixth without any problem. Overall, I recorded 16. 4 mpg and achieved a best tank full of 18 mpg while cruising at 75-80 mph on a trip to Las Vegas. Not bad considering the amount of fun one can have in this car.

$All things considered the sticker price of 63,465, including the ludicrous $1300 gas-guzzler tax, is relatively reasonable. The car I borrowed also had Recaro High Performance seats ($3400), Sapele wood trim package, red tint coat paint and a suede covered steering wheel and shifter knob.

Undoubtedly, the most impressive aspect of the CTS-V Wagon is the availability of a six-speed manual transmission. Who would have even dared suggest Cadillac would have a car like this in its lineup. Especially since other companies, including such enthusiast makes as BMW and Porsche are eschewing manual transmissions in many of their high performance cars. Cadillac is bucking the trend and earning deserved praise, and apparently sales, judging by the interest in the car from at least three people in my home town of 150,000 people.
