In preparation for next months 12 hours of Sebring (and upcoming prototype seasons in both the U. S. and Europe), Honda in the process of testing its new twin-turbo 2. 8-liter V-6 built by Honda Performance Development. In reliability tests with Highcroft Racing drivers Marino Franchitti and Simon Pagenaud at Motor Sports Ranch-Houston and Caroliona Motorsports Park, the new engine logged 2,163 miles.

Last year was a good one for Honda, with championships for its HPD V-8 in both the ALMS and the European Le Mans Series, plus a victory in the LMP2 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and multiple race wins in both ALMS and LMS competition. For 2011, however, the Automobile Club de lOuest (ACO), rule-making body for sports-prototype competition, requires production-based engines for LMP2, which are to be sold or leased under a series-mandated price cap. That requirement led to development of the HR28TT, a 2. 8-liter twin-turbo V-6 thats based on Hondas global V-6 as found in the Accord and Odyssey. For the record, the racing version of this engine is a joint effort between HPD and Honda R&D Americas in Ohio, the teams working together to create a powerful racing engine that meets the ACOs lower price targets for LMP2.

Said Pagenaud: Ive been part of this engines evolution since the first test. Not only does it cover miles and miles, but HPD engineers have found more torque and power at each test. This definitely is going to be a serious weapon in LMP2.
