On Monday, the Mini WRC Team was officially presented to the public at the Team Launch, which took place at the Mini Plant in Oxford, England. This season the team will contest six rounds of the WRC. The Mini John Cooper Works WRC will go up against its rivals for the first time at the Rally dItalia Sardegna May 5-8. The team says the goal in its debut season is to gain valuable experience to be perfectly prepared to take on the entire 2012 World Rally Championship. Initially there will be two Minis taking on Citroen and Ford, who have dominated the WRC the past few years. Kris Meeke (GB)/Paul Nagle (IR) and Dani Sordo (ES)/Carlos del Barrio (ES) are keen to follow in the footsteps of the Three Musketeers, as Hopkirk, Mäkinen and Aaltonen were nicknamed, and shake up the status quo. At the launch in the T Building of the Mini Plant, the spotlight was initially on Hopkirk and Aaltonen as they drove onto the stage behind the wheel of the legendary Classic Mini Cooper S, as it is now called. The guests and media were then treated to their first look and rides in the Mini John Cooper Works WRC. The car was developed by Prodrive, who had tremendous success running Subarus WRC team for many years. The Mini John Cooper Works WRC is based on the Mini Countryman and is powered by a 1. 6-liter turbo engine also used in production Minis. BMW Motorsport has developed the engine for use in race series complying with the FIA Super 2000 regulations, including the World Touring Car Championship. As well as being responsible for the works teams Mini John Cooper Works WRC cars, Prodrive is also supplying customer cars to teams lining up in the World Rally Championship, which looks set to see many more factory teams competing next year.
