Sales during March outperformed all forecasts, so perhaps some people rushed out to purchase new cars before potential shortages hit showrooms. So far this year sales of new cars and trucks are up by 20 percent over last year. Mitsubishi leads the way with a 48 percent improvement in sales year-to-year. Most if its growth is thanks to the Outlander and Outlander Sport. However the company says sales of the various Lancer models are also up. Buick, Cadillac, Mini and Kia closely matched Mitsubishis strong sales increase. Every other brand, except Chrysler, Lexus, Lincoln and Smart, also reported increased sales during the first quarter of 2011 compared to the same period last year. At the corporate level, General Motors leads the charge with a 25% increase in sales. Chrysler is close behind while Ford Motor Co lags with only a 10 percent increase in sales. However, Ford managed to outsell GM in March, for only the second monthly period since 1998. It will be interesting to see what effect, if any, the Japanese disaster has on sales of new cars and trucks during April.
